The king of Bhutan abdicated his throne Saturday and announced plans to hand over the reins of power to his Oxford-educated son, the crown prince, who is expected to usher in a new democratic system of governance in the isolated Himalayan kingdom over the next few years.
King Jigme Singye Wangchuck said a year ago he would abdicate in favor of Crown Prince Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck in 2008 as part of a process of adopting a new constitution which would transform the country from an absolute monarchy to a parliamentary democracy.

Ora cá está um acontecimento interessante, porventura inédito: um rei, confortavelmente instalado no poder há quase 30 anos, num país que politicamente falando não interessa nada, casado com quatro irmãs e dono de uma fortuna, decide que está a mais.
