'Witch' paraded naked in Bihar

(in TIMES OF INDIA, http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/828221.cms) PATNA: An old Dalit woman was tonsured and paraded naked in a Bihar village on a charge of practising witchcraft.

Dhaneswari Devi, 60, was tonsured, tortured and paraded naked in Thatha village under Cheriyabariyapur in Begusarai district by villagers for allegedly practising witchcraft that resulted in the death of a youth. Police officials said they were aware of the incident but no arrest has been made.

This is not an isolated case against Dalits in rural Bihar, but most of the cases remain unreported due to the strong prevalence of casteism at the village level. This month alone two similar cases were reported while last month also two such cases were reported in Bihar, one of India's most lawless and backward states.
